What Your Bulldog Needs

Bulldogs need a lot of extra care and attention, so they may not be the best option for a first time pet owner. There are some common things the bulldog needs, just like every other dog, but they do have extra expectations from owners.

These dogs require very little exercise, but it is important that they get regular physical activity. They do not like excessive exercise, and get tired very quickly due to their body structure and weight. They are also an indoor dog, and should not be left outside for a long amount of time.

Because of their facial structure, especially that of their nose, they are more prone to breathing problems when subjected to extremes of heat or cold. Bulldogs living in warm areas may need an air-conditioned room to cool off in the hotter months. The same idea goes with colder locations; the bulldog should rest in a comfortable room that is not drafty or humid.

Bulldogs should be groomed regularly to reduce the chance of medical problems. Eyes and wrinkles should be cleaned daily to reduce the chance of infection, and bathed maybe once or twice a year.

Be sure to feed the dog about two times per day, since overfeeding can lead to diarrhea or other internal ailments. Any food a dog consumes has an influence on their coat, happiness levels and even health. High quality dry food, or easily digested vegetables and fresh meat are the best choices for a healthy and nutritious bulldog's diet.

Bulldogs also need attentive owners to keep an eye on them to make sure that everything is in good order. Since the bulldog has a strong will, and will flat out refuse to do something if they are not feeling well, it is up to the owner to make sure they are okay. If in doubt, take them to the vet in order to prevent serious health issues from developing. Bulldogs are prone to a number of genetic defects and health issues, which is a reason why new dog owners should not get bulldogs as their first pet. A bulldog owner needs to be educated and aware of the bulldog's health and behavior.

A bulldog owner also needs to supply the bulldog with a comfortable bed that is chew resistant and moisture proof. It needs to be larger than normal, since the bulldog cannot curl up due to the structure of its body. Food and water bowls should be cleaned regularly, and even raised food bowls would do better for eating, helping with the prevention of any eating disorders and ensuring complete digestion.

Buying toys for a bulldog, especially a puppy, is important to keep them happy and occupied when they are alone, as well as help them deal with stress. Toys are important not only for puppies, but also as they grow into adults because this breed of dog loves to chew on things. The best types of toys are hard nylon or rubber, since the small leather chew toys can get swallowed and choked on.

Giving a bulldog the attention it needs is just as important as making sure they have proper food, bedding and toys to keep them happy. Give your bulldog a good dose of TLC every day, and you're be rewarded for it.
